When this inflow was reduced to a small fraction of its former amount, the sea lost 80 percent of its surface area and 90 percent of its volume. All this happened within a period of less than 50 years, from around 1960 until the year 2000. In addition, the copious use of fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture increased the salinity of the soil, creating further environmental problems.
